FESTIVAL PARADE

OFFICIAL FESTIVAL PARADE FLOAT CONTEST RULES

1.  The following rules govern entries requesting to and participating in the 2008 Charlestown Bicentennial Celebration Festival parade Float Contest and are in addition to the Official Festival Parade Rules.

2.  Float Contest Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:  (a) Incorporation of the 2008 Charlestown Bicentennial Celebration Theme (GENERATIONS OF PRIDE); (b) Cleanliness and neatness of the area surrounding the entry at the staging area; (c) Creativity and Originality.

3.  Parade float contest line-up and staging will begin at 8:00 am, Saturday, June 28th, 2008, in the south parking lot of the Charlestown High School, located near the intersection of Park and Monroe Streets, in Charlestown.  All entries competing in the Festival Parade Float Contest must be in position and ready for judging by 9:45 am.

4.  Float judging will begin promptly at 9:45 am, Saturday, June 28th, 2008, in the staging area, and finish prior to the parade start.  The float must be presented for judging as it will appear in the parade.  There must be someone with the float entry at all times.  If no one is with the float entry at the time of judging, it will be disqualified and not judged.  All participants on the float do not need to be present for judging unless they are vital to the theme of the float.  The decision of the judges is final!

5.  Pulling units must be decorated and should be made as much a part of the float as possible.  Undecorated pulling units will cause points to be deducted during judging.

6.  Floats must be decorated for a family atmosphere and constructed in a safe manner as well as not present a health or safety hazard to the contestant or the general public.

7.  Participants are NOT permitted to jump on and/or off the float entry during the parade, and floats should space at least 20 feet behind entries ahead.

8.  The completion of the float and the area surrounding the float must be cleaned up and neat by 9:45 am parade day; as well as, at the end of the parade, participants are responsible for disposal of any and all float materials.

9.  Each float entry must display the group's name or result in point deduction.

10.   The float requirements are as follows-  A float, for purposes of this contest is:  (a) Displays built on or around a flat bed being towed manually or by motor vehicle; (b) Displays that are self-motorized or that are towed by a motor vehicle; (c) The display dimensions must not exceed fifteen (15) feet in width by fifteen (15) feet in height by thirty (30) feet in length at it's greatest points; (d) Decorated motor vehicles that do not exceed the above dimensions are permitted.

11.  All floats must have hand holds for all people who are standing on the float, secure/safe seating is required for all others riding upon the float.

12.  All floats must have an approved and properly charged fire extinguisher on board.

 13.  Participants must provide current and accurate publicity (media) information concerning their unit, for the parade narrator, with their registration.

14.  Monetary Awards and Trophies will be awarded prior to parade start in the staging area.  1st place will receive $1,000.00 and a trophy, 2nd place will receive $500.00 and a trophy and 3rd place will receive $250.00 and a trophy.  

15.    These rules are subject to change on short notice.  Advance notice will be given appropriately.  Failure to comply with the parade rules will result in unit member or entire unit (entry) removal from the parade (even if in progress) and/or future participation banning.
